Side
Side, once the capital and port city of ancient Pamphylia, now lies within the modern village of Selimiye, in southwestern Turkey, on the Mediterranean coast west of the mouth of the Manavgat River. Though founded by Aeolian Greeks, a non-Greek language was spoken here. Side, boasting a natural harbor and two artificial harbors for larger ships, was Pamphylia's most significant port.
Side has always been considered a favorite holiday destination, worthy of exploration because it is an ancient city with regions that must be visited and stayed in. Side's history dates back to the 7th century BC, but it is believed to have an even older history as it was ruled by many empires, including the Lydians, Persians, Romans, and Seljuks. The name "Side" means "Pomegranate," leading to the belief that this settlement dates back to the Hittites, who were connected to the region through research.
According to legend, Side takes its name from the fertility and nature goddess Side, which also means "Pomegranate." The story dates back to when Side walked along the Manavgat River with her small daughter and the nymphs. They picked flowers and came upon a tree with fine branches, shiny leaves, and colorful flowers.
When Side broke a branch for her daughter, the tree began to bleed. Side realized that the tree was a nymph that had transformed into a tree to escape from evil people and was saddened. She wanted to leave, but her feet were stuck to the ground. Bark began to grow from her feet, taking the form of a tree. The nymphs were greatly saddened, and their tears watered Side's roots. "Something went wrong," said Side, "now I am a symbol of nature, life, and fertility with many blood-red fruits. Allow my daughter to come and play under my shade often. Do not let her destroy any tree or flower, as perhaps each tree or flower has transformed into a god." Since then, pomegranates have spread across the peninsula and have become symbolic in ancient Side through coins and wall engravings.
